What about Lent

Around this time of year we enter into the season of Lent. I did not really know what Lent was growing up, even though many people in my life participated in the season. Lent is a season of repentance, fasting, self-examination, reflection, and preparation for the coming of Easter. It begins on Ash Wednesday (today) and ends on Easter.

I have to admit that many times in the past I took it as a time to restrict my intake and not eat certain items in a disordered way. I thankfully do not look at it that way anymore, but I really do my best to find things that are a distraction in my life from a deeper relationship with God.

As we begin this season, I am focusing on replacing some of my behaviors with different habits that will add more benefit to my life.

  1. Replacing watching shows with more reading– devotionals and scripture – I am guilty of placing entertainment over my spiritual growth at times, and I really don’t want that to continue to be the case.
  2. Replacing sweets with prayer – I love me some good chocolate and ice cream! While I don’t partake it in every day, I have had more cravings for sweets lately. I also have dear people in my life who are going through stuff and I really want to be reminded to pray for them more often. It is my hope that the next 40 days will solidify this habit even more in my life! (Ps- if you ever had a prayer need, you can always reach out to me on social media- I will keep it confidential and will earnestly pray for you)
  3. Replacing BUSY with REST– This is going to be a daily challenge as well as weekly. Each day I have certain tasks that I feel I have to get done. Some really do need getting done, and others can wait. The real challenge will be working diligently through the week with at least 1 hour of rest each evening, and then taking 1 full day of rest each week. Going back to having a Sabbath. I really feel this will be helpful for my personal growth as well as my marriage.

It is my prayer that this season is one of growth and maturity in my own faith and yours as well!

  1. I don’t usually give up something for Lent, but I do try to add a positive thing to my life on a daily basis. Often times, those daily things (scripture reading, more time in prayer for others, etc.) become new habits that stick with me.

  2. This is fabulous! I, too, don’t generally give up ‘things’ for Lent, but rather unhealthy ways of living – not just physically, but also mentally and spiritually. The Lenten season definitely has changed in meaning for me over the years.

  3. I definitely agree and need to try to turn the TV off and starting to read more. Especially books that focus on personal development.
